Data from Instagram has ranked the most popular museums in the world on the image sharing platform.

Chart-topping in attendance at 7.4 million annual visitors is the Mona Lisa's home --- the Louvre --- which unsurprisingly ranks highest on the World's Most Instagrammed Museums list.

Big draws for Instagrammers are immersive, participatory, visually-arresting installations such as the touring show Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Mirrors which broke attendance records at the Hirshhorn. The six dazzling Infinity Mirror Rooms drew 160,000 people and pushed the Hirshhorn to a record 475,000 visitors during the exhibit's near-3 month run, ranking the DC museum #8 on the Instagram list for the U.S.

By the end of the show in May 2017, Instagram users posted 34,000 images of the exhibition to their accounts. The hashtag #InfiniteKusama during that period reached 91 million Twitter and Instagram accounts, with 330 million impressions.

The Guardian describes the 88-year-old Japanese artist's work as "mirrored chambers in which sparkling LED lights, luminous acrylic pumpkins, or floating orbs form an immersive, kaleidoscopic abyss;" the allure for selfie takers is hard to miss. (The blockbuster is now on at LA's The Broad---50,000 tickets sold out in one hour.)

Then there's the Museum of Ice Cream phenomenom. This sugar-coated traveling pop-up "museum" is arguably an Instagram photo set, helped along by celebrities such as Kim Kardashian and Gwenyth Paltrow who share their fun times with followers, using hashtag #MOIC.

Overall, Instagram data shows that #art was the 5th most popular hashtag used in 2017, trailing #love, #fashion, #photooftheday, #photography.
