For the first time, Witherell’s is holding an auction of Sacramento Arts, highlighting such local figures as Irion Shields, Tarmo Pasto—and a rare find—the John McQuarrie palette sketch for the 1930 Sacramento Train Station mural.

The online auction runs from September 13 to 27, 2017.

A Sacramento preview will be from 1-5 p.m. on September 14, 2017 at Witherell’s Gallery, 300 20th Street in Sacramento.

Brian Witherell, Witherell’s chief operating officer, is especially pleased to offer the John McQuarrie palette sketch for McQuarries’s1931 Sacramento Train Station mural.

“I am so excited about this find,” said Brian Witherell, who also is an “Antiques Roadshow appraiser.”

“It’s not often you find even one sketch that still exists for a mural, but finding two—for different aspects of the same mural—is extraordinary.”

“It’s such an interesting piece of art that documents unique Sacramento’s history.”

The framed pen-and-ink sketch is estimated at $500 to $1,000.

Sacramento’s Irion Shields—who worked at McClellan Air Force Base as a sign painter—became known for the California paintings done in his spare time.

Shields’ “Autumn Morning,” a 22 by 28 inch-oil of the Delta shown at the Crocker Art Museum’s Tuesday Club, is estimated at $1,000-to-$2,500.

A California State University, Sacramento, professor of art and psychology, Tarmo Pasto also become known for his research in art therapy as well as his paintings.

His “Nevada Dawn” shows the golden tones of the desert and the bright colors of the sky.

The oil is estimated at $1,000 to $2,000.

Witherell’s has many other works by local artists, including the “Cowboys” by Maija Peeples and a sketch by Gregory Kondos in the nearly 100-lot auction.
